What is a Shar Pei?

The shar pei, produced in the area of Dali Town, Nanhai, Guangdong, China, is one of the world’s famous fighting dogs. It is generally 46-56 cm tall, weighs 22-27 kg, lives 11-12 years, and has a square shape. It has a unique shape, with a head like a hippo, a mouth like a tiled tube, triangular eyes, a blue tongue coating, and its skin is full of folds in childhood, so it is called a Shar Pei. Standard Appearance: Short back, petite body, head larger than body, black nose and dark blue tongue, as deep wrinkles as possible on face and body, ears small and drooping. Coat Quality and Color: The coat is short and stiff, growing like a brush. The appearance seems to be melancholy, full of sadness and dignified Shar-Pei, but in fact, the mood is very cheerful, lively, naughty and playful.

What does shar pei look like?

The Chinese Shar Pei is an alert, compact dog of medium build with a square profile and tight engagement; the well proportioned head is slightly slender but not too large in relation to the body. The short, rough coat, loose skin covering the head and body, small ears, a “hippo” muzzle, and a high-set tail give the Shar-Pei a unique and special appearance. The head, neck, and body of puppies are covered with loose skin and wrinkles, but in adulthood, these wrinkles may be limited to areas such as the head, neck, and withers.

The Shar-Pei’s diet should be evenly matched with meat and vegetables, and the nutritional ratio should be comprehensive and reasonable. Feed can be self-prepared, such as: cornmeal 40% (10% can be replaced by brown rice), pure bran 5%, bean cake noodles 10%, pure bone meal 4%, salt 1%, plus fresh and clean beef (dairy calf), 20% of beef, pig and sheep lungs, chicken, duck, goose intestines, sheep intestines, chicken heads, duck feet, duck livers, and offal are chopped and 20% of fruits and vegetables, potatoes and chopped carrots are steamed or boiled. Due to the different cooking times of various feeds, in order to prevent raw, burnt and reduce the damage to the nutrition of the feed, it is necessary to separate the animal feed, grain feeding, carrot, potato feed, fruits and vegetables, etc., and mix and feed. . An appropriate amount of vitamin preparations can be added when feeding. On this basis, localities can make some adjustments according to local actual conditions. Qualified units and individuals can buy full-price dog food produced by professional manufacturers with good corporate reputation and better product quality. It must be fed at regular and fixed points every day, so that the dog can develop a good habit of feeding at regular and fixed points. Canine utensils should be clean and regularly sanitized. Fresh drinking water is provided throughout the day, and the water is changed once a day in the morning and in the afternoon in summer. In winter and early spring, attention should be paid to Shar-Pei dogs, especially puppies’ defense and warmth work. The kennel should be sheltered from wind, warm and sunny. The Shar-Pei is a sporty dog, so there should be enough venues for it to move around freely. The dog owner often wipes the Shar-Pei’s skin with a soft towel, which can make the dog cleaner and healthier. Washing the eyes of dogs with boric acid water can prevent keratitis. While caring for the dog, it also promotes the communication between people and dogs and deepens the feelings between each other.
