How Big is a Full-Size Pomeranian?

Pomeranians are small, fluffy, and full of personality. Known for their lively nature and charming appearance, they have become one of the most popular toy dog breeds in the world. But just how big does a full-size Pomeranian get? In this article, we will explore the typical size of a Pomeranian, factors that influence their growth, and how they compare to similar breeds.

Typical Size of a Full-Grown Pomeranian

Pomeranians belong to the toy breed group, which means they are naturally small dogs. A full-grown Pomeranian typically weighs between 3 to 7 pounds (1.36 to 3.17 kg) and stands about 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) tall at the shoulder.

While most Pomeranians fall within this range, some may be slightly smaller or larger depending on genetics, diet, and health. Dogs that weigh over 7 pounds are often referred to as “throwback Pomeranians,” which means they have inherited genes from their larger Spitz ancestors.

Growth Stages of a Pomeranian

Like all dogs, Pomeranians go through various growth stages before reaching their full adult size. Here’s a breakdown of their development:

1. Newborn Stage (0 to 2 Weeks)

At birth, Pomeranian puppies are tiny and fragile, usually weighing around 2 to 5 ounces (57 to 142 grams). They are blind and deaf during this stage and rely completely on their mother for warmth and nourishment.

2. Neonatal to Early Puppyhood (2 to 8 Weeks)

During this period, Pomeranian puppies experience rapid growth. By the time they reach 8 weeks old, they typically weigh between 1 to 2 pounds (0.45 to 0.9 kg). They begin to open their eyes, move around, and develop their social skills.

3. Growth Phase (2 to 6 Months)

Between 2 to 6 months of age, a Pomeranian’s weight increases steadily. By 3 months old, they weigh approximately 2 to 4 pounds (0.9 to 1.8 kg). Around 6 months old, most Pomeranians reach 75% to 85% of their adult size, and their weight is typically between 3 to 6 pounds (1.36 to 2.72 kg).

4. Adult Stage (12 Months and Beyond)

By the time a Pomeranian reaches one year old, they are considered fully grown. Some Pomeranians may continue to fill out slightly until 18 months, but significant growth stops by 12 months.

Factors That Influence a Pomeranian’s Size

Several factors can affect how big a Pomeranian grows, including:

1. Genetics

Genetics play the most significant role in determining a Pomeranian’s size. If a puppy’s parents were small, it is likely the puppy will also be on the smaller end of the spectrum. Conversely, if the parents were larger, the puppy may grow beyond the standard size.

2. Diet and Nutrition

A well-balanced diet is essential for proper growth. High-quality dog food with the right balance of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals ensures that a Pomeranian grows to its optimal size. Underfeeding or overfeeding can lead to growth issues and health problems.

3. Exercise and Activity Level

Pomeranians are active dogs despite their small size. Regular play and exercise help develop strong muscles and bones. However, excessive exercise at a young age can put strain on their tiny joints, affecting their growth.

4. Health Conditions

Certain health problems, such as hypothyroidism or growth hormone deficiencies, can affect a Pomeranian’s growth. Regular vet check-ups ensure they are growing properly and maintaining a healthy weight.

How Pomeranians Compare to Other Small Breeds

To better understand the size of a Pomeranian, it helps to compare them to similar small dog breeds:

Chihuahua: Slightly smaller, weighing 2 to 6 pounds (0.9 to 2.7 kg) and standing 5 to 8 inches (12 to 20 cm) tall.

Yorkshire Terrier: Similar in size, typically weighing 4 to 7 pounds (1.8 to 3.2 kg) with a height of 7 to 8 inches (18 to 20 cm).

Maltese: Weighs 4 to 7 pounds (1.8 to 3.2 kg) and stands 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) tall, slightly taller than Pomeranians.

Toy Poodle: Typically weighs 6 to 9 pounds (2.7 to 4 kg) and stands 9 to 10 inches (23 to 25 cm) tall, making them slightly larger.

Do Teacup Pomeranians Exist?

Some breeders market extremely small Pomeranians as “Teacup Pomeranians.” These dogs typically weigh less than 3 pounds (1.36 kg). However, they are not a separate breed and often come with significant health risks, including fragile bones, hypoglycemia, and heart issues.

Caring for a Full-Grown Pomeranian

Once a Pomeranian reaches adulthood, proper care is essential to maintain their health and well-being:

Nutrition: Feed high-quality dry kibble or a balanced homemade diet tailored to small breeds.

Exercise: Daily walks and playtime keep them active and prevent obesity.

Grooming: Regular brushing is necessary to maintain their thick double coat and reduce shedding.

Vet Check-Ups: Routine health checks ensure they remain in good condition.

Training and Socialization: Start early to help them develop a well-behaved and confident personality.

Conclusion

A full-size Pomeranian typically stands 6 to 7 inches tall and weighs 3 to 7 pounds. Their size is influenced by genetics, diet, health, and exercise. While they are small in stature, their lively and affectionate nature makes them a beloved companion. Understanding their growth, care needs, and potential health concerns ensures that they live a happy and healthy life.
