A gathering of compassionate individuals in Winnipeg has embarked on a mission to alleviate the strain of high living expenses by providing nourishment for residents’ beloved pets.
On a recent Friday morning, a multitude of people congregated outside the Bear Clan Patrol headquarters on Selkirk Avenue, eagerly awaiting the distribution of complimentary bags and boxes of pet food.
Angela Klassen, serving as the Bear Clan’s Downtown West Broadway coordinator, recounted the heartening scene, describing how the line extended around the block, with many individuals patiently queued since 9:00 a.m., demonstrating remarkable kindness and consideration towards one another.
The distribution commenced just before 11:00 a.m., with organizers committed to closing only after ensuring every bag and box had been claimed.
This event marked the second collaboration between the Bear Clan, Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS), and Feed the Fur Babies Canada in hosting a mobile pet food bank catering to the needs of cats and dogs.
Meghan Irwin, Director for Behavior and Retail Operations at WHS, reflected on lessons learned from their previous endeavor, where they rapidly depleted hundreds of pounds of food within an hour.
Undeterred, Irwin expressed optimism for their expanded initiative, doubling the quantity of provisions to meet escalating demand, underscored by a 25% increase in the community’s need for emergency pet food support over the past year.
The WHS routinely allocates approximately $1,000 worth of pet food monthly to those in need, a testament to the growing necessity within the community.
Jared Chambers, a proud owner of two adult German Shepherds, shared his financial burden of spending $100 every two weeks on dog food, now relieved by the provision of free sustenance.
Grateful for the assistance, Chambers acknowledged the significant impact of the pet food bank in light of current economic challenges, emphasizing its role in easing financial strains exacerbated by inflation.
Amidst the distribution, Angela Klassen reiterated the collective purpose behind the initiative, emphasizing its dual objective of supporting both the community’s vulnerable populations and their cherished pets, echoing the escalating demand for aid.
