In 2013, while residing in Barrie, Johnson became involved with Ruff Haus, initially as a trainer. Today, Ruff Haus accommodates 45 to 55 dogs on weekdays, offers weekend training programs, and provides grooming services, boasting a team of nine dedicated staff members.

This trend experienced a notable surge during the pandemic, as families sought companionship and spent more time at home.
Despite initial setbacks due to pandemic restrictions, Johnson witnessed a resurgence in demand for pet care services post-lockdown, particularly for grooming and training. The overwhelming demand led to a backlog in grooming appointments, highlighting the essential role played by establishments like Ruff Haus in meeting the needs of pet owners.

Johnson’s observation of a doubling in available daycares in Barrie over the past two decades underscores the industry’s expansion, complemented by in-home services and specialized facilities.
