What to feed mother dog after giving birth

What to feed mother dog after giving birth?

The mother dog cannot eat dog food or other hard and stimulating food immediately after giving birth. At this time, you can feed the dog glucose water, or fresh chicken soup, etc., to help the dog replenish physical strength. About a week after the production, the diet of the bitch is mainly based on digestible food, adding a certain amount of meat, and ensuring that the bitch has enough water. A week after giving birth, you can start to slowly return to normal diet, but you need to pay attention to calcium supplementation for the bitch during pregnancy to ensure the health of the bitch and puppies.

Care for mother dog after giving birth

In general, the following points should be paid attention to in the postpartum care of the mother dog:

  1.  Replace the contaminated mattress and pay attention to heat preservation.
  2.  The bitch becomes very ferocious after giving birth to protect the puppy. The bitch who has just given birth should be kept at rest for 8-24 hours. Strangers should not approach it to avoid the bitch being harassed, causing the bitch to be nervous, biting or biting. Consequences of swallowing puppy.
  3.  The bitch that has just given birth usually does not eat, but can feed some glucose water first, and then add some eggs and milk after 5-6 hours, until it officially starts feeding after 24 hours. At this time, it is best to feed some palatable and easy-to-digest food. In the first few days, feed nutrient-rich meat feed, milk to make eggs, meat porridge, etc., and pay special attention to calcium supplementation.
  4.  Pay attention to the nursing situation of the bitch. If the puppy is not nursing, it is necessary to find out whether it is lack of milk or sick, and take corresponding measures in time. Bitches with low lactation can be fed milk or pig trotter soup, fish soup and pig lung soup to increase milk production.
  5.  Some bitches have poor motherhood and are unwilling to take care of their pups. They must be severely criticized and forced to breastfeed their pups. For bitches who don’t care about pups, you can also deliberately grab a puppy and make it scream, which may wake up the bitch’s motherhood, but pay attention to safety. In addition, if the puppy is inactive at this time, it is necessary to prevent the bitch from squeezing the puppy.
  6.  Do a good job of antifreezing and keeping warm for young dogs in winter. Hang cold curtains at the entrance of the kennel. If the temperature of the kennel is too low, an infrared pad can also be used, which can adjust the suitable temperature for the puppy.

What to do if your dog won’t eat after giving birth

If the dog does not eat after giving birth, it may be that the production is too hard, resulting in weakness and loss of appetite or calcium deficiency after childbirth. It is recommended that the owner take the pet to the veterinary hospital to check if there are other problems, and then infusion treatment, intravenous calcium infusion to relieve the dog’s symptoms. Dogs do not eat after giving birth and are also accompanied by symptoms of weakness, usually postpartum hypocalcemia.

Precautions

Lactation is the basic stage of puppy development, and breast milk is the best nutrient for puppy normal growth and development. However, if the female dog dies or lacks milk after giving birth, and has more than 6 litters, artificial milk supplementation should be carried out.

The most commonly used artificial milk supplement is fresh goat’s milk, and cow’s milk should not be fed. Because the milk is hard and the pup’s digestive system is not fully developed, feeding milk will cause bloating, indigestion and other consequences. 10-day-old pups are fed every 3 hours during the day and every 4-6 hours at night. After 6 weeks, some egg yolks, thick broth, soy milk or rice porridge should be added every day. Feed six times a day after 30 days.

If you use a milk replacer instead, you can mix 61% goat milk, 21% EC, 6 grams of bone meal, 200 IU of vitamin A, and vitamin D and an egg yolk, heat it to 40 °C, and add 2 grams of citric acid. to solidify into casein. The feeding amount is determined according to the age and body weight. For 3-day-old puppies, it is 15% to 20% of the body weight.
