What is hovawart? What does hovawart look like?

What is hovawart?

The Hofwart is a large shepherd dog whose name comes from the German word Hofewart, which means “guardian of assets”. There are already records of the breed in the 13th century, and texts in the 15th century record the dog’s pursuit of thieves. But then it was almost endangered. A large, strong but not bulky dog that looks a bit like a golden retriever, barks muffled but powerful. Although not a hunting dog, it is traditionally the patron saint of keeping sheep and livestock safe. Naturally have a strong sense of defense and good defense ability.

What does hovawart look like?

A large, strong but not bulky dog that looks a bit like a golden retriever, barks muffled but powerful. Although not a hunting dog, it is traditionally the patron saint of keeping sheep and livestock safe. Naturally have a strong sense of defense and good defense ability. And show a high degree of loyalty. Body length slightly greater than height. The head is very powerful, with a broad and prominent round forehead. The nose color is the same as the fur color. drooping triangular ears, oval eyes. The back is straight and the hips are slightly sloping down. Strong and powerful limbs. The tail hangs down longer than the hocks and is held high when excited. Oval feet. It has thick long hair that protects against rain and snow, and the thick monochromatic long hair covers its entire body. The outer coat is relatively long and the inner coat is straight or slightly wavy. The chest, legs, belly, and tail have fringed hair. The fur color is golden yellow, black, dark brown, etc. The color of the eyes, nose, and paws should be consistent with the color of the body hair, and a little white on the tip of the tail is allowed.
hovawart living habits

It is very quiet in the room, but it will be very excited and energetic when it is out in the field. Obedient to the master, full of affection, calm and firm. Loyal to family. They get along well with children if socialized from an early age. Adult dogs will still play like they did when they were kids. He has a good temperament and is strict with himself. Brave and alert and has a good sense of guarding, it is a good watchdog. Passionate about protecting property and home, fighting intruders. If it is a visitor who is popular with its owner, it will accept them immediately. He has a good sense of smell, is very smart, has great flexibility, and you are often overjoyed at how quickly you can learn. Contact with dogs of the same gender will have aggressive behavior, but with non-canine pets, if socialized from an early age, you can live in harmony. The dog is ideal for tracking, avalanche rescue, watchdog, and defense work. Not suitable for pet dogs, they are better in the wild. They like cool climates and are accustomed to sleeping outdoors. Would make an excellent watchdog for wild homes, farms, and country homes.
hovawart rearing

Because the Hofwalter is a dog breed that particularly likes to wander in the wild, many Hofwalters have fragile claws. Therefore, Hofwalters should trim their toenails regularly. Too long toenails are not only unsightly in appearance, but also have a certain impact on the dog’s pace, or pierce the pads. Normal walking gait can lead to joint injuries and even deformed feet.
Especially the Hovwalt, who has been indoors for a long time, rarely goes out, so it is difficult to polish the toenails by himself. Hofwalters can actually shorten their claws by making contact with the ground, but you should still keep an eye on the length of the toenails at all times, and it is very important to trim them when the wear is not enough. Otherwise, when the toenails are too long, they can form curls and run the risk of digging into the soles of the feet. The degree of toenail wear depends on how active the Hofwalter is, the texture of the ground, and where the nails grow.
