how to groom a shih tzu puppy

Combing a Shih Tzu‘s hair is an essential part of their grooming routine. Their long, flowing hair requires regular attention to keep it healthy, tangle-free, and looking its best. In this article, we will discuss how to comb a Shih Tzu’s hair, step-by-step.

Step 1: Gather the necessary tools

Before you start combing your Shih Tzu’s hair, you will need to gather all the necessary tools. You will need a metal comb, a slicker brush, and a detangling spray. You may also need thinning shears to trim any tangles or mats.

Step 2: Prepare your Shih Tzu

Before you start combing, make sure your Shih Tzu is relaxed and calm. You can give them a treat or a toy to keep them distracted while you comb. If your Shih Tzu has any mats or tangles, use the detangling spray to help loosen them up.

Step 3: Start with the slicker brush

Begin by brushing your Shih Tzu’s hair with a slicker brush. This type of brush has fine, short wires that are close together, making it perfect for removing tangles and mats. Brush your Shih Tzu’s hair in the direction it grows, starting at the head and working your way down to the tail. Be gentle and use a light touch, as Shih Tzus have sensitive skin.

Step 4: Use the metal comb

Once you have used the slicker brush to remove any tangles and mats, it’s time to use the metal comb. The metal comb will help to smooth out your Shih Tzu’s hair and remove any remaining tangles. Start at the top of the head and comb down the body, being sure to comb in the direction of hair growth.

Step 5: Use a dematting comb for stubborn tangles

If your Shih Tzu has any particularly stubborn tangles or mats, use a dematting comb to help loosen them. These combs have sharp blades that can cut through mats and tangles, so use them carefully. Start by holding the hair firmly between your fingers, and then use the dematting comb to carefully cut through the tangle or mat. Be careful not to cut too close to the skin.

Step 6: Trim any tangles or mats

If your Shih Tzu has any mats or tangles that cannot be removed with a comb or dematting comb, you may need to trim them with thinning shears. Hold the hair firmly between your fingers and use the thinning shears to carefully cut through the tangle or mat. Be careful not to cut too close to the skin.

Step 7: Repeat as necessary

Depending on the length and thickness of your Shih Tzu’s hair, you may need to repeat the combing process several times to ensure that all tangles and mats have been removed. Be patient and take breaks as needed, so that your Shih Tzu doesn’t become restless or uncomfortable.

Step 8: Finish with a final brush

After you have finished combing your Shih Tzu’s hair, give them a final brush with the slicker brush to make sure that all tangles and mats have been removed. This will also help to distribute the natural oils in your Shih Tzu’s coat, keeping it healthy and shiny.

Combing your Shih Tzu’s hair is an important part of their grooming routine. By following the steps outlined above, you can keep your Shih Tzu’s coat looking healthy and beautiful. Remember to be patient and gentle, and to take breaks as needed. With regular combing, your Shih Tzu will look and feel their best, and their coat will be free from tangles and mats, which can lead to discomfort and even skin irritation.
