Training a Shih Tzu to pee and poop can be a challenging task, but with patience and consistency, it is achievable. Potty training is an essential aspect of responsible dog ownership, and it can prevent your Shih Tzu from soiling your home or yard. In this article, we will discuss the steps you can take to successfully train your Shih Tzu to pee and poop in the appropriate areas.

  1. Establish a Routine

The first step in potty training your Shih Tzu is to establish a routine. Dogs thrive on predictability, so try to take your dog outside to pee and poop at the same time every day. This will help your Shih Tzu understand when it is time to go outside and what is expected of them.

  1. Choose a Specific Area

Choose a specific area in your yard or outside your home where you want your Shih Tzu to go potty. This will help your dog associate that spot with going to the bathroom. Take your Shih Tzu to that spot every time you take them outside, and use a consistent command, such as “go potty” or “do your business,” to help them understand what you want them to do.

  1. Monitor Your Shih Tzu

When you take your Shih Tzu outside, monitor them closely to ensure that they are going potty in the designated area. If they start to wander or get distracted, gently redirect them back to the designated spot. If your Shih Tzu does not go potty within 5-10 minutes, bring them back inside and try again later.

  1. Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a crucial aspect of potty training your Shih Tzu. Whenever your dog goes potty in the designated area, give them lots of praise, affection, and a treat. This will help your Shih Tzu understand that they have done something good, and they will be more likely to repeat the behavior in the future.

  1. Consistency is Key

Consistency is essential when it comes to potty training your Shih Tzu. Stick to your routine and take your dog outside at the same time every day. Be patient and consistent with your training, and avoid punishing your Shih Tzu for accidents. Punishment can be counterproductive and may make your dog anxious or fearful.

  1. Gradually Increase Freedom

As your Shih Tzu becomes more reliable with their potty training, gradually increase their freedom inside the house. Start by giving them access to one room at a time, and supervise them closely. If your Shih Tzu has an accident, take them outside immediately and reinforce the designated potty area.

  1. Keep Up with Training

Even after your Shih Tzu is fully potty trained, it is essential to continue reinforcing good habits. Take your dog outside at the same time every day, and praise them for going potty in the designated area. If your Shih Tzu has an accident, do not scold them but instead, reinforce the appropriate behavior.

In conclusion, potty training a Shih Tzu requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Establish a routine, choose a specific potty area, monitor your dog, use positive reinforcement, and be consistent with your training. Remember to avoid punishment and gradually increase your dog’s freedom inside the house. With dedication and perseverance, your Shih Tzu can become reliably potty trained, making your life and theirs more comfortable and enjoyable.
