If you have a pet ball python, it’s essential to ensure that they receive a well-balanced diet to keep them healthy and thriving. In the wild, ball pythons feed on a variety of prey, including rodents, birds, and other small mammals. However, when kept as pets, they can be fed a diet of frozen-thawed rodents. Here are some tips on what to feed your pet ball python.

Rodents

Rodents are the most common food for ball pythons, and they can be bought frozen-thawed from pet stores or online. It’s best to feed your ball python rodents that are about the same width as their widest part. A general rule of thumb is to feed your ball python once every week to ten days, depending on their age and size.

Mice are the most commonly fed rodents to ball pythons, but they are not very nutritionally balanced. Rats are a better option because they have a more balanced nutritional profile, and they come in different sizes, making it easier to feed your snake according to their size.

It’s also essential to ensure that the rodents are appropriately thawed before feeding them to your snake. Place the frozen rodent in a plastic bag and immerse it in warm water for around 30 minutes or until it is completely thawed. Never feed your ball python a live rodent as it can cause stress to your pet and could potentially harm them.

Other Prey Items

While rodents are the most common food for ball pythons, they can also be fed other prey items. These include quail, chicks, and even small rabbits. However, it’s essential to ensure that these prey items are appropriately sized for your ball python and that they are nutritionally balanced.

Supplements

To ensure that your ball python receives all the nutrients they need, it’s essential to supplement their diet with vitamins and minerals. Calcium is especially important for ball pythons, and you can provide a calcium supplement by dusting the rodents with a calcium powder before feeding them to your snake.

Water

Finally, it’s crucial to ensure that your ball python has access to clean drinking water at all times. You can provide water in a shallow dish, and it’s best to change the water daily to ensure it remains clean and fresh.

In conclusion, feeding your pet ball python a well-balanced diet is crucial to keep them healthy and thriving. Rodents are the most common food for ball pythons, but other prey items can also be fed. It’s important to ensure that the prey items are appropriately sized for your snake and that they are nutritionally balanced. Additionally, supplements such as calcium should be provided, and clean drinking water should always be available. With proper nutrition, your ball python can live a healthy and happy life.
