What’s the difference between american bully and pitbull

When it comes to dog breeds, the American Bully and the Pitbull are two that are often confused. While they share some similarities, they are different breeds with distinct traits. Let’s take a closer look at the differences between these two breeds.

Origins and history

The Pitbull is a type of dog that has been bred for blood sports such as bull-baiting and dog fighting. They were originally bred in England in the 19th century and were brought to America in the mid-1800s. In America, they were used for a variety of purposes including hunting, guarding, and as family pets. Today, Pitbulls are bred for companionship and are often considered loving and loyal pets.

The American Bully, on the other hand, is a newer breed that was developed in the 1980s. It is a cross between the American Pitbull Terrier and other breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Bulldog. The goal of breeding the American Bully was to create a dog that had the muscular build and physical attributes of the Pitbull, but with a more stable temperament and a greater focus on companionship.

Appearance

Both the American Bully and the Pitbull have muscular builds, broad heads, and short, smooth coats. However, there are some key differences in their appearance. American Bullies tend to be larger and heavier than Pitbulls, with a more muscular and bulky build. They have a shorter muzzle and a wider chest. Pitbulls, on the other hand, are leaner and more agile, with a longer muzzle and a narrower chest.

Temperament

Temperament is where the biggest differences between these two breeds lie. While Pitbulls have a reputation for being aggressive and dangerous, this is largely due to improper breeding, training, and socialization. Properly bred and socialized Pitbulls are actually known for their loyalty, gentleness, and intelligence.

American Bullies, on the other hand, were specifically bred for their stable and friendly temperament. They are often described as gentle giants, with a strong desire to please their owners. They are loyal and affectionate with their families, but can also be protective when necessary.

Training and socialization

Both breeds require early socialization and training to ensure they develop into well-behaved, obedient pets. Pitbulls can be more challenging to train due to their high energy levels and strong prey drive. They require consistent training and positive reinforcement methods to prevent them from becoming aggressive.

American Bullies are generally easier to train than Pitbulls, thanks to their stable and eager-to-please temperament. However, they still require early socialization and obedience training to ensure they are well-behaved and safe around people and other animals.

In summary, while the American Bully and Pitbull share some similarities in appearance, there are significant differences between the two breeds. The Pitbull has a longer history and was originally bred for blood sports, while the American Bully was developed as a companion breed with a focus on stable temperament. Both breeds require proper training and socialization to ensure they become well-behaved and safe pets, but the American Bully may be a better choice for those who want a gentle, loyal companion.
