What is swordfish? What does swordfish look like?

What is swordfish?

Swordfish (scientific name: Xiphias gladius), also known as “swordfish”. It is a common fish in the world’s tropical and subtropical oceans, named after its upper jaw extends forward in a sword-like shape. In 1967, a “speed comparison table of animals in the sea” published in the Soviet “Nature” magazine showed that the swordfish swims the fastest, reaching a speed of 130 kilometers per hour.
Swordfish have a typically streamlined body with a smooth body surface, a long, pointed upper jaw, smaller dorsal fins, a flattened bill, and no gills and pelvic fins. Swordfish have different colors, generally the back and body of the fish are brown to black. The average weight of swordfish is 68-113 kilograms, the average length is 2.1 meters, and the mouth accounts for 1/3 of its body length. The main food of swordfish is other fish and squid. Swordfish is distributed in all oceans except the Arctic Ocean. It is also a major food fish and has important fishery value.

What does swordfish look like?

Swordfish, also known as “swordfish”, has a short and strong body, a short slender tail, flat and flat, with a developed central raised ridge on each side, and no other small raised ridges. The snout extends forward into a flat and sharp sword-like protrusion. The eyes are large and the teeth are small, which gradually disappear as they grow, and adults do not have jaw teeth. No gill rakers. The base of the first dorsal fin is short, triangular in shape, far away from the second dorsal fin, the second dorsal fin is small and located at the back of the body; the pectoral fin is low; no pelvic fin; The back and sides of the body are dark brown, and the ventral side of the body is light brown. The first dorsal fin membrane is dark brown, and the remaining fins are brown or dark brown.

Swordfish are generally 3 meters long, with a maximum length of 5 meters and a maximum weight of about 650 kilograms. Females are usually larger than males. In the Pacific Ocean, the largest swordfish is found. The average length measured is 1.2 to 1.9 meters. Atlantic swordfish can weigh up to 320 kg, but in the Mediterranean, adult swordfish typically weigh less than 230 kg.

swordfish living habits

Oceanic pelagic warm-water migratory fish species will migrate seasonally in winter, feed and migrate to cooler waters in summer, spawn and migrate to warmer waters in autumn, and generally live in warm waters between 18°C and 22°C. , but also found that its temperature resistance is good, occasionally found in cold waters with a water temperature between 5 °C and 10 °C, and larvae mostly appear in sea areas with a temperature above 24 °C. It has a wide range of activities, with a general depth of 200 to 600 meters, but there are also those with a depth of more than 650 meters, and the deepest can reach 800 meters. There are many in the Kuroshio waters that flow through the eastern part of Taiwan. Inhabit the ocean, deep sea and offshore coasts.
swordfish rearing

Swordfish are the apex carnivore in their depth range, and their diet includes other pelagic fish, tuna, loach, flying fish, squid and other cephalopods and crustaceans.

Swordfish have keen eyesight to see their prey, and their “white” muscles power their assaults. The swordfish uses its sharp sword to attack its prey, tearing it to shreds or devouring it whole. Swordfish feed during the day. They roam up and down the water, and many small shrimp, fish and squid fail to successfully evade predators due to changes in light intensity, eventually becoming food for swordfish.
