What is an amami rabbit?

Ryukyu Rabbit, also known as Amami Rabbit, Amami Short-eared Rabbit, and Amami Black Hare, is a primitive rabbit that is only distributed on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima in Japan. Inhabiting dense forests, nocturnal, herbivorous. They are the remnants of ancient rabbits in the Asian continent, so they are called living fossils. Listed on the IUCN Red List: Endangered (EN).

What does amami rabbit look like?

The Ryukyu rabbit is 43-51 cm long; its ears are 4.5 cm long; its weight is 2.5-2.8 kg. Ryukyu rabbits are dark brown in color, with thick fur, short feet, stout bodies, large and curved claws, and their ears are noticeably shorter than other rabbits or hares. They also make calls, a bit like a pika.

The food of Ryukyu rabbits has a strong randomness. Although Ryukyu rabbits are completely herbivorous animals, their food is very complicated. In hot weather, they will eat some high-quality fairy grass, and in cold things, they will also eat some tree roots. Vitality is very tenacious.

Ryukyu Rabbit is alert by nature, has sensitive hearing and vision, escapes quickly, hides tightly, has strong fertility, and has many enemies, but few animals can catch it. It is nocturnal, and especially likes to walk many times. fixed old road. Starting from dusk, it is active all night. Sometimes it is not yet home. During the day, when the sky is dark or drizzle, and the roads are broken and few people, they also come out to play.

The diet of Ryukyu rabbits is complex and depends on the habitat environment. Generally, they like to eat young grass, wild vegetables and the leaves of certain shrubs. In winter, they eat grass roots. Ryukyu rabbits that live near farmland. Soybean sprouts, broad bean sprouts, and soybean sprouts are particularly harmful. It gives birth to three or four litters every year in shallow and hidden rabbit dens, with 5-6 litters each, and the young rabbits can run within a few hours after birth.
