What is bluethroat? What does a bluethroat look like?

What is bluethroat?

The blue-spotted chin (scientific name: Luscinia svecica) is also known as the “blue-throated singing robin”, commonly known as the blue indigo chin. The body size is similar to that of a sparrow, with a body length of 12-13 cm and a weight of 17-18 grams. The head and upper body are mainly dark brown. Eyebrows are white. Tail feathers dark brown, base chestnut red. The chin and throat are bright blue with black stripes below. Underparts white. Inhabits thickets or reeds. It is timid in temperament, and often runs for a short distance underground, stopping for a while, twisting or spreading its tail feathers from time to time. Mainly feed on insects, worms, etc., but also eat plant seeds. The breeding season is May. Nests on the ground in thickets and grass. The nest is built with weeds, roots, leaves, etc. Each nest lays 4-6 eggs. Eggs are shiny blue-green. The incubation period is about 14 days.

What does a bluethroat look like?

The blue-spotted chin male has earth-brown upper body feathers, darker top feathers, white eyebrow lines, bright blue chin and throat, chestnut patches in the center, and black horizontal stripes and light chestnuts under the chest. The road is broad, the abdomen is white, and the flanks and tail coverts are brownish-white. Tail feathers dark brown, base chestnut red.
The female bird resembles the male bird, but the chin and throat are brownish-white, the throat has no chestnut patches, the throat is white without orange and blue, and the fine black cheek lines are connected to the breast girdle composed of black spots. It differs from the female red-throated robin and black-breasted robin in the markings on the tail.
The coverts on the wings of young birds have light chestnut patches and light spots, commonly known as “bladder spots”.
Iris dark brown. Mouth black. Feet brown.
The differences between the subspecies are the size of the red spots on the throat (the Tibetan species is the smallest), the depth of blue (the northern subspecies is darker, the named subspecies is lighter), and the presence or absence of black between the blue and chestnut chest bands Band (named subspecies). Young birds are warm brown with rust-yellow spots.

bluethroat habits

The blue-dotted chin has a timid temperament, and often runs for a short distance underground, stopping for a while, twisting or spreading its tail feathers from time to time. Likes to hide under reeds or short shrubs, and flies very low, generally only for short distances. Often jumps happily and runs extremely fast on the ground. Usually, the song is monophonic, and during the breeding season, it emits a loud and beautiful song, and it can also imitate the sound of insects.
It mainly feeds on insects and insect larvae such as beetles, stink bugs, locusts, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, etc., especially Lepidoptera larvae. Also eat plant seeds etc.

bluethroat rearing

The blue-spotted chin is a typical omnivorous bird, and it is usually not picky, but as a pet bird, the diversification of food will be more conducive to the growth of the blue-spotted chin, especially during the moulting period. feed. In summer, pay attention to feeding the powder with the mix to keep it fresh and prevent deterioration.
In the wild, the blue-spotted chin mainly feeds on beetles, bugs, locusts, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and other insects and insect larvae, especially Lepidoptera larvae. Also eat plant seeds etc.
Since the domestic blue-spotted chin has just entered the new environment, the powder feed should be adjusted into a thin paste, and a few mealworms or corn borer larvae should be added on it, and no water should be given. Let the birds eat the worms in the food jars in the cage when they are hungry, and at the same time eat the thinner, and then thicken the paste until it is too much to eat the powder. Or use small insects to feed, 4 times a day, 2 to 3 small insects each time, be gentle when filling, avoid damage, and then put it into a chin cage after self-feeding, supply clean water, and change it every day . The chin material can be made up of 50% corn flour, 20% mung bean flour, 20% cooked egg yolk, light fish meal or 10% silkworm chrysalis powder.
